By Ellen Britt #woofpost-all
Most people talk about how to get weight off their dog, but there are some dogs who need to put on a few pounds or who has lost weight due to aging. What is the best way to help your skinny dog gain some weight?
First of all, if you are having difficulty keeping weight on your dog in spite of your best efforts, please consult with your veterinarian to make sure there is no underlying medical condition that needs attention.
There are several things you can try to help your dog put on weight:
Change in feeding schedule – Many people feed their dogs twice a day. If you do this as well, try feeding your dog a smaller portion in the morning and a larger portion of his food in the evening. This way, his body will be encouraged to store some of those calories as fat while he sleeps at night.
Remember to wait at least 30 minutes after your dog has finished eating to give him exercise in order to avoid dangerous bloat.
Change dog food – Adding a higher protein, higher fat food to your dog’s diet can help him gain wait. If you can find one in the same brand line you are already feeding, gradually transition him to the new food to avoid stomach upset. If it’s an entirely new food, you’ll want to transition very slowly to prevent intestinal distress.
Add sweet potato and/or pumpkin – These two foods are convenient canned and will add a lot of tasty calories to your dog’s diet. Don’t feed too much at once and watch your dog’s bowels for any signs of upset.
Feed extra treats – Feeding extra, high calorie nutritious treats is another way to help your dog gain weight. Natural peanut butter is an excellent option, perhaps given with a piece of carrot. Do NOT feed peanut butter that has xylitol (a sweetener) to your dog as it can be fatal!!Again, if you are having difficulty keeping weight on your dog in spite of your best efforts, please consult with your veterinarian to make sure there is no underlying medical condition that needs attention.
